With Encryption Debate Raging On, Google Opens Up Data on HTTPS Usage

Google [image: howtogeek.com]
Good news for bloggers, it turns out Google has announced the use of data and google https tell 70% of its service use https. If you use blogger platform must be know that google has provide use https for blogspot.

Google was announced that its regular Transparency Report that provides an insight into how the company works and interacts with users, governments, and third-parties, will from now on feature a special section dedicated to HTTPS and encryption usage.

The new HTTPS section will provide details on the state of HTTPS support for Google products, which the company has started moving a few years back, reaching 77% coverage at this particular moment.

Out of all its major services, Gmail has 100% coverage, while Google engineers are still working to bring Drive, Maps, Advertising and the rest up to par.

Google says that the reasons that prevent it from achieving 100% coverage for all of its products have to do with older hardware and software that don't support modern encryption, countries that intentionally degrade HTTPS traffic, and products like Blogger where certificate management can be tricky when users add a custom domain to their blog.

Monitoring HTTPS Usage on Alexa Top 100 Sites
But the report won't include data only on its products. Since encryption has become such a big deal today, Google will be periodically assessing the state of HTTPS support on Alexa Top 100 sites as well, including the results in its periodical reports.

Google will be scanning if these top sites support HTTPS, if they use a modern TLS configuration, and if they use HTTPS by default on their service.

In Google's first HTTPS Transparency Report, only 21 sites got a perfect score for these criteria, a short list that includes services such as Yahoo, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Reddit, Pinterest, Yandex, Wikipedia, and WhatsApp.

Why the focus on Alexa Top 100 sites? Because these 100 sites make up for around 25% of all the Internet traffic today, and if they realize that encryption is crucial for their users, then smaller sites will soon follow.

As a bonus, Google's Transparency Report also includes a Certificate Transparency checker that will allow users to verify the validity of an SSL/TLS certificate that an HTTPS website is using. The train of thought behind this feature is to show that if HTTPS is present, it doesn't automatically mean it's good quality HTTPS.

Ubuntu Touch (image: sysads.co.uk)

The good news, ubuntu users can get update your ubuntu touch phone using OTA (Over The Air). Yep this OTA-10, as reported ubuntu touch developer.
We've been asked by our readers about what is going on with the development of the Ubuntu mobile OS, as no news has been published lately on our website about the upcoming OTA-10 update for phones and tablets.

Well, first of all, not much has happened in the Ubuntu Touch world lately, as it is currently in Feature Freeze, which means that no new features or major changes will be added to the OTA-10 build with the exception of critical bugs.

Second of all, Canonical's Łukasz Zemczak, who usually posts daily reports of the latest landings for Ubuntu Touch had some personal problems, but today he's back with some interesting news on the progress of the OTA-10 software update.

"Let's take a look at some of the landings happening this week. We had a new big Android release for the device bits for flo, mako, and the emulator," said Łukasz Zemczak, Ubuntu Foundations. "Exciting times in overall."

Ubuntu Touch developers are pretty busy with OTA-10 work
Besides the major Android release, the Ubuntu Touch developers also managed to update several important components, such as ubuntu-system-settings, which brings improvements to the system update status tracking, and the system-image client, which now allows for 3G update download and offers better OTA notifications.

Moreover, the Dialer app now lets users copy and paste numbers to/from the keypad entry, the Oxide-Qt video player received various improvements, there's a new version of the Indicator Sound, bringing microphone controls when an external mic is connected, and the Unity 8 interface received numerous attractive features, such as new side-stage for tablets, tutorial redesigns, etc.

So, as you can see, the Ubuntu Touch developers are pretty busy with OTA-10 work. Expect some more related news soon! For Ubuntu touch users should be patient and get the latest version of OTA-10's.

GNU Linux-libre Kernel 4.5 Officially Released for 100% Freedom

Linux (image: mintguide.org)
Not long ago I wore the 4.4.5 kernel in my slackware machine, kernel 4.5 was released but there i don't want trying because i have no time for built kernel from source in my slackware machine.

But Free Software Foundation Latin America (FSFLA) announced on March 14, 2016, the release and availability for download of their Linux-libre 4.5 kernel, for those who want 100% freedom.

The release of the GNU Linux-libre 4.5 kernel arrives two days after Linus Torvalds' announcement for Linux kernel 4.5, a release that introduces a bunch of new attractive features, updated drivers, and many under-the-hood improvements.

GNU Linux-libre kernel 4.4 is, of course, based on the upstream freely distributed sources of the Linux 4.5 kernel, but deblobbing some of the included drivers, such as Qualcomm WCNSS SOC, qat_c62x, qat_c3xxx, goodix touchscreen, and adf7242.

Furthermore, the deblobbing of Nouveau, Radeon, Skylake sound, and XHCI rcar drivers has been updated, and various adjustments were applied to parts of code from the upstream kernel, in particular in the wireless networking drivers area.

Who is the GNU Linux-libre 4.5 kernel for?

The GNU Linux-libre project was created a long time ago with the intention of giving people a 100% free version of the upstream Linux kernel, suitable for use in operating systems that follow Free Software Foundation's GNU Free System Distribution Guidelines.

By default, the GNU Linux-libre kernel is designed from the offset to be compatible with the GNU Operating System, but you're free to use it with your GNU/Linux operating system, whether you are a developer creating a new Linux kernel-based OS or a user who wants total freedom.

If you are interested in the GNU Linux-libre project and you want to deploy it on your operating system, our suggestion is to read the official Wiki found at http://linuxlibre.org, and download the source package of GNU Linux-libre kernel 4.5 right now via our website.

How you are interested to try it on your operating system? If you want to make sure to try to understand how to built kernel from source, and don't forget to take a snack, coffee or your favorite food for waiting the process.

Tor Users Can Be Tracked Based on Their Mouse Movements

tor browser can tracking, fingerprinting, tor browser, anonymous, deanonymous, software, security, arief-jr.blogspot.com
Tor Browser Fingerprinting (image: arief-jr.blogspot.com)

It turns out tor browser user can tracking like treatment of suspicious users which can perform malicious activity.

Yep, Independent security researcher Jose Carlos Norte has discovered a set of new methods of fingerprinting Tor users, which can be used to deanonymize them later on during abusive law enforcement investigations or cyber-surveillance campaigns.

The process of "user fingerprinting" refers to ways of tracking non-standard operations and details about a user's behavior. While analytics services track a bunch of such details, the Tor Browser provides protection against some of these actions in order to keep the user's identity a secret.

Fingerprinting is especially dangerous to Tor users because data recorded while they surf the Web via Tor browsers can then be compared to data logged while the user was surfing the same website with their regular browser.

The data that is usually logged in fingerprinting schemes is not 100% reliable or accurate for that matter, but it provides a starting point for future investigations.

If a user who has legitimate reasons to keep their anonymity online is unmasked by an oppressive regime, the consequences of fingerprinting techniques can be more dangerous than just having your name and online identity attached to a database entry in an analytics service.

Mouse movements give you away

Mr. Norte has published on his blog a series of fingerprinting techniques that are effective against Tor Browser users, along with a page demonstrating his research.

The first technique that he identified refers to the speed at which users scroll through a page using their mouse wheel. Even if for all mice the scroll speed is the same, an attacker could still identify patterns in the scroll events based on each individual's idiosyncrasies.

Additionally, attackers can log the speed at which users move the mouse cursor across a page. Since each user has their own OS mouse sensitivity preferences and their set of gestures when using the device, this technique is more accurate than the previous one.

If the user is using a trackpad to navigate the page, the fingerprinting technique is even more precise, adding accurate speed metrics to the already-recorded scrolling and movement patterns.

Damn you, JavaScript! Damn you forever!

The researcher also discovered that he could fingerprint a user's machine, not just the person. By running a CPU-intensive JavaScript operation in the browser, he could record the time needed to execute the task and use this information later on to pin suspects to a certain computer from where a Tor browser has been used.

Another low-level technique also uses the getClientRects JavaScript function, which returns details about a DOM element's rectangular box. The details that this function returns have a different value and accuracy level based on the user's screen resolution, font configuration, and various other settings. This technique can be used to identify users by their hardware and software settings.

The researcher says that all these methods depend on the attacker's ability to measure time in a Tor Browser at the 1-millisecond level.

The Tor Browser includes protection against such scenarios, limiting the Date.getTime() JavaScript function to measurements no smaller than 100ms.

Mr. Norte says that there are two methods of getting around this limitation, which, apparently, the Tor Project had been notified of ten months ago.

In another similar study conducted a few weeks earlier, Mr. Norte also discovered that some misconfigured Apache servers could leak the general location of a Tor user if the server is running under a certain configuration.

So what is your response as this browser tor??

Google Will Stop Showing Flash Ads on January 2, 2017

Flash VS HTML5 (image: new.swfkit.com)

The news has recently Google has put time on the expiry of the platform Flash ads, so Google will stop showing static Flash ads begin January 2, 2017.

During the past few years, Google has continually dropped hints here and there about the fact that it intends to move to HTML5 for its ads platform, the main cash cow for all of its other business ventures.

The biggest move in direction was made last year, in February, when the company announced it was starting to automatically convert Flash ads to HTML5, where possible.
"Google will stop accepting Flash ads in June 2016"

A full year later, Google has made it official and said that, starting June 30, 2016, its advertising platform will stop accepting new ad submissions in Flash format. This includes both the AdWords and DoubleClick Digital Marketing platforms.

As existing ads and campaigns will expire, Google plans to stop showing static Flash ads altogether beginning January 2, 2017.

The only exception to this rule is Flash-based video ads, which will not be impacted by this change, mainly because HTML5 video, even if supported by most browsers, is not at the same level of performance, stability and customization when compared to what Flash videos can provide.

In the meantime, Google urges all customers to take advantage of its Flash-to-HTML5 conversion utilities and get rid of the much-maligned Flash code from their ads.
"HTML5 is not a security panacea"

While Flash Player has been plagued by a plethora of security problems during the past years, the threat of malicious ads, also known as malvertising, won't go away by removing support for Flash ads.

Malvertising can also be carried out via JavaScript code, and the only protection known to work until now is having an ad blocker installed on your browser.

It's a good thing that Google is dropping Flash for HTML5, but let's not get ahead of ourselves, Flash will continue to remain a popular runtime regardless, and HTML5 does not guarantee a safer Web experience either.

For example, researchers at two universities in Rome and Salerno Italy last summer showed that many of these HTML5 APIs can be used to carry out the hidden drive-by downloads and malware spread.

In August, Amazon also announced it will stop showing ads on the network Flash ads begin next month, September 2015.

Do a quick google will also turn off ads flash on blogspot platform owned by Google, or overall? We'll see what will be done by the google policy, and wait until the 2nd of January 2017.

Judge Throws Out Ludicrous Google reCAPTCHA Lawsuit

Google reCAPTCHA (image: support.google.com)

A judge for the District Court of Northern California has thrown out a class action lawsuit against Google that accused the company of intentionally defrauding users that were filling in a CAPTCHA field while signing up for a Gmail account.

According to the dismissed lawsuit's documents, a group of users tried to sue Google under the everlasting umbrella of a class action lawsuit because they were forced to enter two words inside a CAPTCHA field presented when they created a free Gmail account.

The lawsuit says that while the first term was useful in detecting if the user was a bot or a real person, the second word was not needed, and Google was profiting off users that were filling in the second word.

How Google reCAPTCHA works
We're all very much accustomed to Google's reCAPTCHA project by now, and at one point or another, we all filled in one in the past.

As Google has explained multiple times, the challenge text shown in Google's reCAPTCHA technology is actual words from scanned books as part of the Google Books digitization project, or real street numbers from photos taken by Google Maps cars.

While Google has been employing OCR (optical character recognition) software to translate scanned books and street photos into actual text, sometimes blurred photos prevent the OCR software from accurately detecting the proper words or numbers.

In this cases, the blurred data is taken and sent to the Google reCAPTCHA service, which shows it to real humans, and gets back a more accurate result.

Judge fails to see how Google is profiting off users

The lawsuit tried to argue that users signing up for a Gmail account were abused by Google, who unnecessarily showed a second word, after users had already filled in the first one, which proved they were real persons.

The plaintiffs tried to say that users should be paid for the time and effort put into deciphering and transcribing the second word, from which Google profited by incorporating its results in the Google Books and Maps services.

The judge didn't see it this way and argued that the one second that it takes users to transcribe that word is more than acceptable when compared to the years of free service the users get from Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Books projects.

Considered to be an experiment, the first batch of YouTube Red Originals shows includes titles like "A Trip to Unicorn Island," "Dance Camp," "Lazer Team," and "Scare PewDieDie."

Three original movies

The first announced title is "A Trip to Unicorn Island," which is a feature-length movie that follows Lilly Singh as she travels through 26 cities around the globe.

PewDieDie's much-anticipated Web series
But the selling point of this experiment is PewDieDie's much-anticipated Web series called "Scare PewDieDie."

Created by Skybound Entertainment and Maker Studios, some of the people behind the hit TV series "The Walking Dead," it features the Swedish gamer facing real-life scenarios inspired by some of his favorite video games.

With almost 42 million YouTube subscribers, PewDieDie is the driving force behind YouTube's bold move into Netflix and HBO's territories.

As announced before, the service will cost $9.99/month, but Apple users will have to pay $12.99 to cover the in-app purchase tax practiced by the company.

Google also warns that YouTube Red and its originals series may not be available right from the get-go in all countries around the globe.

It turned out that a growing number of new features that are provided youtube yes, other than monetization features there are also features ad-free.

Google's Self Driving Car That Could Cause an Accident 13 if not for a Human Driver

Self Driving Car (image: Google.com)

Outstanding Now in this modern age, the more sophisticated and advanced technology. Start of production of gadgets, drones to the car, because of the increasingly high demand in the world. such as the car's creation that the current google.

Google's monthly report for its self-driving car project is in, and according to data recorded by onboard computers, the car's human drivers intervened 13 times between September 2014 and November 2015 to avoid an accident.

In June 2015, Google decided to adopt an open and transparent policy regarding its self-driving car project. Its initial report showed that the car's AI was quite good at avoiding accidents and the accidents it was involved in were not the computer's fault, but mostly happened because of the car's human driver or other traffic participants.

Back then, the company also agreed to put out monthly reports on the project's status. A few days ago, December's report was released, and it included data on all the traffic events that made the car's AI disconnect from the autonomous mode and switch back to manual, as well as on the incidents when the driver forcibly took control of the car.
The car's AI needed traffic corrections 341 times since September 2014

According to Google's telemetry data, this happened 272 times because of the technology's failure to recognize traffic conditions and take an appropriate action for the car.

When this happened, the driver needed to put their hands on the wheel and take the proper course out of a situation. The average time a driver needed to keep their hands on the wheel was 0.84 seconds, allowing the autonomous mode to reconnect soon after.

There were also 69 situations where the driver needed to take "immediate" control of the vehicle because of potential safety-related incidents, like breaking traffic laws, cyclist and pedestrians walking into traffic, and an improper analysis and perception of traffic lights.

All these incidents were analyzed at Google's headquarters by the company's geeks, and using powerful simulation software, the company concluded that 13 out of these 69 incidents would have ended with "contact."

In two cases, the car would have collided with traffic cones while, in other three cases, the self-driving car would have collided with another vehicle, if not for the human driver.

Google says that 10 out of the 13 incidents were its technology's fault while the other three would have been caused by other traffic participants.

Therefore, for the fans especially automotive-based technology definitely can not wait to see the improvements done by Google technology. In the future, the technology may be able to spread to various cottage industries, agricultural and other.

780 Million Ads bad in 2015 that blocked google, Click-Bot Would Cause $ 7.2 Billion in Damage in 2016

Google Search Engine (screenshot: arief-jr.blogspot.com)

Who is not familiar with the advertising media on the web to monetize make money, to the bloggers would have to recognize from advertisements on offer but nevertheless I recommend choosing your adsense as an advertiser or waiting to be advertise on your website.

But recently Google defines bad ads as advertising that contains malicious code (called malvertising), ads that cover up the entire area of the page, and advertisements that intentionally promote fake products and services, used primarily in online fraud.

The company's review process involved both automatic AI-powered algorithms, but also manual reviews carried out by Google employees.
Google blocked 7,000 ads leading to phishing sites

According to the company's 2015 report, its employees suspended more than 10,000+ sites and 18,000+ accounts for attempting to sell counterfeit goods, and another 30,000+ sites for misleading claims, like quick weight losses and miracle hair-growth products.

Google also took down 7,000 phishing sites advertising through its ads program and disabled well over 12 million ads for pharmaceutical products that have yet to obtain an official approval from government agencies.

Furthermore, Google also shut down 10,000 sites offering PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs), that either delivered malware, or made unauthorized changes to a user's PC.

Additionally, the company also rejected or took down around 17 million ads that mimicked system warnings or tried to fool users into interacting with them.

Google was also active on the mobile advertising market where it also blackballed 25,000 mobile apps after their developers placed ads too close to native UI buttons, and caused accidental ad clicks.
Ad networks expect damages up to $7.2 billion because of ad bots

The search ad giant is entitled to its actions after, in 2015, an ANA and White Ops study revealed that during the past year ad networks reported click-bot fraud varying from 3% to 37% of its total click-through rates, compared to 2% to 22% reported in 2014.

The same study also estimated that, throughout 2016, ad networks are expecting to lose up to $7.2 billion to fraudulent ad impressions or click-bots.

So be careful in choice of advertising, make sure trust advertising like Google Adsense, Infolinks, and if want CPA offers you must contact provide if trusted, go ahead.

Facebook Lite (image: techcrunch.com)

Facebook Lite, Facebook stripped down variant of its administration for Android, simply past the prominent point of interest of 100 million month to month dynamic clients and turned into the interpersonal organization's quickest developing versatile application.

The application, which is intended for developing business sector clients who might have ease cell phones and low quality Internet associations, has achieved the 100 million turning point only nine months after its dispatch in June — that is snappier than Facebook's primary versatile application, and any others. Facebook said it is most mainstream in Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico, and the Philippines, yet it is accessible in 150 nations.

The application is only 1MB in size to empower a fast download and save money on accessible memory. That made its usefulness genuinely essential, however now Facebook is sprucing things up with the expansion of various new components, including support for video, different photograph transfers, squeeze to-zoom for photographs, and emojis.

We asked Facebook whether it has arrangements to dispatch a comparative application for iOS or different stages, yet the organization didn't answer. The organization said that clients can see "a few promotions" on Facebook Lite. As of right now, the Facebook Lite clients speaks to a little part of the informal organization's 1.59 billion dynamic userbase be that as it may, as it keeps on developing at a quick pace, the organization might need to adjust its promoting procedure for the application.

Contracting an informal community down to a 1MB application is no simple undertaking, and Facebook went into point of interest on how it accomplished that deed in a blog entry that'll be of enthusiasm to any organizations that work in developing markets.

Of all the U.S. organizations, Facebook is a standout amongst the most receptive to developing markets.

It has representatives positioned worldwide and it likewise frequently sends staff to developing markets to test the conditions that its administrations must work with. A year ago, the organization presented '2G Tuesdays' to offer U.S.- some assistance with basing representatives test developing economic situations for themselves.

Facebook likewise runs its Free Basics administration, once in the past known as Internet.org, which interfaces 'the following billion' by offering a determination of web administrations for nothing. The administration is questionable in light of the fact that Facebook hand chooses the administration that clients can see, and drove India to square it because it damages the standards of internet fairness.
